Armed Forces Remembrance Day: FG honours Nigeria's fallen heroes

Nigeria is commemorating this year's Armed Forces Remembrance Day - Africa's most populated country is paying homage to the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice of laying down their lives for the country - January 15 is the day set aside to honour and celebrate the country's fallen heroes annually Nigeria is celebrating the year 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Wednesday, January 15. The Nation's capital, Abuja, is on standstill as President Muhammadu Buhari leads senior government officials in honour of Nigeria's fallen heroes. 

Buhari, a retired army general himself, laid the wreath as a symbolic gesture to pay homage to members of Nigeria's armed forces who have lost their lives while in the front-line.

Vice President; Yemi Osinbajo, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Femi Gbajabiamila and Chief Justice of the Federation; Tanko Mohammed are also attending the event.

At the moment, the Nigerian military is facing one of its biggest challenges ever as the armed forces are tackling monumental security challenges nationwide. In the northeast, Boko Haram terrorists have laid siege in the region for more than a decade, while in the north-central and northwest, armed bandits continue to cause havoc and destruction in local communities. Meanwhile, former Imo state governor and senator representing Imo West senatorial district, Rochas Okorocha has called on the federal government to do more to improve the welfare of Nigeran troops in the frontline. Okorocha made the submission in a statement sent to journalists on Monday, January 13 and signed by his media aide, Mr Ahmed Mustafa, in commemoration of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations. He commended the armed forces and called on the federal government to do more in repaying the officers and men for their loyalty and sacrifice to the nation.
